Artist Studio

Here's my friend's Susan's studio. It's in an old bean plant factory, which my Dad actually worked at when he was a teenager.

What I love about Susan's studio is it looks like a real working artist studio. Now, don't get me wrong, I love looking at those magazines with the beautiful studios with everything in its perfect place. But I can never imagine me working in one of those. But Susan's studio . . . you just want to roll up your sleeves and make something!

Oh and did I mention it has a bathroom, sink and frig . . . because it does.

You all come back now!

Open Studio

A friend of mine recently rented a studio. She's my hero! It's a wonderful space in an old bean plant building. Thus the name Bean Plant Studio. Lots of bricks and wood and she has her own bathroom. I swear I could just live there!

Anyhoo, the first Friday of the month downtown Greeley,CO opens it's doors. Susan is opening her studio and showing not only her artwork but the artwork of two fellow artists (told you she was my hero).

So if anyone is in the area please drop by . . . I heard there will be treats.

Dragon Sketch

I'm doing a label for a line of fair trade hand roasted organic coffees.

Amazing Origins has a coffee cart inside the Isis bookstore in Denver, CO. If you live in the area you should drop by - both are worth the stop.

This is my preliminary sketch. I'm always hesitate to show people my rough drafts, because they looks so, well . . . rough. But I think you lose something drawing and re-drawing. I like to keep the sketch somewhat loose and go from there.

So here it is for the world to see - my naked little rough sketch. Next I'll put it on watercolor paper and start the inking, then the painting. I'll post the inking stage in a couple of days.

Guess I better get back to work.

Breckenridge

My sister and I spent 3 glorious days in Breckenridge, CO. It was my birthday vacation. We stayed in a cute little condo and my sister cooked for me each night. Pretty darn special!

But no sketching. By the time we came back in the evening I was just too worn out. Do other people have problems producing art on vacations?

I feel revved up afterwards and definitely in the creative mood but never seem to do much on the actual vacay. I just suck everything up for later.

Someday though I would like to try an actual art vacation.

Comfort Zone

Everyone has them. Some are bigger than other peoples, some are smaller. Other people's comfort zones often seem silly to you - why would they worry about that, when they have this to be afraid of.

I was interview for a podcast, to make it worse it was by someone I admire. Talk about comfort zones.

Luckily she was charming and real and made the experience very nice.

So if you are interested in listening to a podcast about creativity, sketching and imagination, jump over to Voodoo Cafe, Rice Freeman-Zachery's blog and there is a link to it.

The Edible Raven

It's done!!!!!

I've been working the last, geez has it been almost a year?!?!? on a magazine, the Edible Raven. I did both the illustrations and the setup on it. I'm so proud of it. I love the stories in it and getting to illustrate them, truly let me see what I want to do in life. You have those jobs you do mainly for the paycheck and then you have those jobs - if you're lucky - that are what you are suppose to be doing in life.

There were the usually bumps (okay maybe more like a mountain or two) along the way, but all learning experiences to store away for next time. And there will be a next time. Plans are already in the making for Issue Two. I'm so excited.

Here a direct link to the Edible Raven on MagCloud. There is a Preview button so you can look at the whole magazine.
